Our Story

Two churches. One Heart.

In 2013, two church families began asking a simple question: "Can we do more together than we can alone?"

One church traced its roots to a movement of church planting throughout Northern California. The other began with a family who encountered Jesus after fleeing Laos and living in a refugee camp in Thailand. Though their stories were very different, God was writing something new that would tie them together.

Through prayer, friendship, and a shared commitment to Scripture, these two congregations sensed God calling them to become one church family. In 2014, Encounter Church was born.

Inspired by Isaiah 6:1-8, our name reflects the vision that continues to shape us today: Encounter God. Surrender to His will. Live for His Kingdom.

Today, we are a diverse community united by one purpose—to know Jesus, make Him known, and help others discover the life, hope, and transformation found in Him.

John Stone | Teaching Pastor

For more than four decades, John has faithfully served the local church with a passion for teaching Scripture, shepherding people, and helping others grow in their relationship with Jesus. In 2001, he partnered with the North American Baptist Conference to plant a church in Sacramento that would eventually become Encounter Church. He remains passionate about helping people encounter Jesus and live faithfully for His Kingdom. John and his wife, Laura, have a heart for people and count it a joy to serve the Encounter Church family together.

Joe Walters | Teaching Pastor

Joe Walters has served as a pastor at Encounter Church since helping plant the church in 2014. He began pastoring and preaching in 2009 and is passionate about faithfully teaching God’s Word with clarity, conviction, and practical application. His desire is to help people know Christ more deeply, trust the authority of Scripture, and see how the gospel transforms every area of life. Outside of ministry, Joe is the founder of Legacy Wealth Management, where he serves families as a wealth advisor. He and his wife are grateful to call the Sacramento area home and count it a privilege to serve the people of Encounter Church and their community.

ABOUT

What we believe

Everything we teach, practice, and pursue is rooted in God's Word.

Our beliefs are grounded in the foundational truths of Scripture and shape every aspect of our teaching, ministry, and life together.

Frequently Asked Questions

God

There is one eternally existing God who has three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is the creator of all that exists, both visible and invisible, and is therefore worthy of all glory and praise.  God is perfect in love, power, holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom,  justice, and mercy. He is unchangeable and therefore is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Revelation

God has revealed Himself to us through His son, Jesus Christ (who is the visible image of the invisible God), the holy scriptures, and through all of creation itself.

MANKIND

Humans, both male and female, were created in God's image for His glory. The first humans, Adam and Eve, were created without sin and appointed as caretakers of the rest of God's creations.

THE FALL

When Adam and Eve chose not to obey God, they ceased to be what they were made to be and became distorted images of God. This caused them to fall out of fellowship with God, and fractured all of creation ever since that time.

Salvation

Jesus Christ came to reconcile us with God. He lived a life without sin and willingly died on the cross to pay the penalty for our transgressions. God raised him from the dead and now, by grace, offers as a free gift eternal life to all who follow Christ, by faith, as their Lord and Savior. That is why salvation can be found in Christ alone.

THE CHURCH

The Church is meant to be the visible body of Christ, sent into the world to glorify God and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

RESURRECTION

Jesus Christ is returning one day to judge both the living and the dead and to usher in the fullness of God's kingdom on earth.
